Between two and five, children change from climbers into builders. A two-year-old wants to get up onto things and roll off them. A four-year-old wants to make a den, invite a sibling in and defend it. A good play sofa should handle both stages, and still be a sofa when everyone is tired.
This guide explains which Neztly set suits each age, what to check on safety, and which fabric copes best with a household of small children.
Age 2 to 3: climbing and rolling
At this age most play is physical: climbing on, sliding off, pushing pieces around the floor, and lying on them. Children this age also fall over a lot, so low, soft shapes with rounded edges matter more than the number of pieces.
What suits this stage: the Half Round sets. The curved half-round pieces are low and soft, and a toddler can climb on and off without help.
- 2-piece Half Round set: two half-rounds. A small, low starter set for a corner of the living room.
- 6-piece Half Round set: two half-rounds plus four squares. Enough for a little climbing course or a toddler-sized sofa.
Age 3 to 6: forts, tunnels and pretend play
Around three, play becomes imaginative. Children start building: a fort, a boat, a car, a shop. They want shapes they can combine, such as triangles for roofs, rectangles for walls, and circles for wheels or stepping stones. They also start playing with siblings and friends, so they need enough pieces for two.
What suits this stage: the 10-piece set, which we consider the sweet spot. It has four squares, two rectangles, two triangles and two circles, which is enough for real forts and tunnels without taking over the room.
Siblings, or a sofa for the whole family
The 12-piece set adds two half-rounds to the 10-piece mix. That gives two children room to build at once, and enough pieces to make a full-size floor sofa for the family. Assembled as a sofa it measures about 120 × 60 × 60 cm, and it stacks down to roughly 60 × 60 × 100 cm when play is over.
- 12-piece Pine Green velvet
- 12-piece Blush Pink velvet
- 12-piece Storm Grey velvet
- 12-piece Sandy Snuggle corduroy
- 12-piece Mossy Cozy corduroy
At a glance
| Age | What they do | Suggested set |
|---|---|---|
| 2–3 | Climb, roll, push pieces around | 2-piece or 6-piece Half Round |
| 3–6 | Build forts, tunnels and pretend scenes | 10-piece |
| Siblings / family seating | Two builders at once, sofa for everyone | 12-piece |
These are starting points, not rules. A confident three-year-old with lots of floor space will enjoy a 10-piece; a family in a small apartment may happily stay with the 6-piece.
What to check on safety
Whatever brand you buy, look at these four things before you order:
- Foam: it should be certified and non-toxic, and dense enough to hold its shape when children climb on it. Neztly uses the same high-density foam core in every set.
- Zips: children are curious about zips. Neztly covers close with hidden, child-safe zippers.
- Edges: every piece should be soft all the way round, with no hard frames inside.
- Age guidance: Neztly sofas are designed for children aged 2 and up. As with any climbing play, keep an eye on younger children.
Which fabric for a toddler?
Both fabrics are soft, and both have machine-washable covers. The difference is how they look day to day. Corduroy has a ribbed texture that hides marks between washes, which many parents of toddlers prefer. Velvet has a smoother, more polished look. Our velvet vs corduroy guide goes into more detail.

Questions parents ask
Is a play sofa safe for a two-year-old?
Neztly sofas are designed for children aged 2 and up. They use certified non-toxic foam, soft rounded pieces and hidden zippers. Supervise climbing play with younger children, as you would on any play equipment.
Which set should I buy for a three-year-old?
For most three-year-olds the 10-piece set is the best fit. It has enough shapes for forts and tunnels and suits ages 3 to 6. If space is tight, the 6-piece Half Round set is a good start.
Can I wash the covers?
Yes. Every cover on every piece unzips and is machine washable on a cold, gentle cycle.
What if it doesn’t suit my child?
You can return or exchange it within 14 calendar days of receiving it.
